🍺 British Pub Snack 🇬🇧 UK Food

Pork Scratchings Calories

Last reviewed: August 1, 2026

Pork Scratchings are a quintessentially British pub snack: thick pieces of pork skin and fat that have been rendered and deep-fried until they puff up into hard, crunchy, intensely savoury crackers. Unlike American pork rinds (which are lighter and airier), British pork scratchings retain the layer of fat beneath the skin, creating a more substantial, chewier, and richer product. They are traditionally sold in small packets behind pub bars, consumed with a cold pint of bitter, and are one of the most calorie-dense snacks available.

About Pork Scratchings

Pork scratchings have been a feature of British butcher shops and pubs since at least the Victorian era, born from the butcher's need to use every part of the pig. As pub culture developed in Britain through the 20th century, packets of pork scratchings became a standard bar snack alongside crisps (potato chips) and nuts. They achieved iconic status in British culture and were referenced in the 1993 Meat Loaf song. Today, artisan pork scratchings with flavourings like smoked paprika and black pepper have given the category a premium revival.
